MAW Bangalore kicked off today with a busy schedule. With 17 companies in attendance, this week promises to be an exciting and productive week.

We began the first day with a ‘Welcome and Introductions” from Brian Hoskins, Director of Business Development on Microsoft’s Emerging Business team, Harish Vaidyanathan, Director on Microsoft’s Developer Platform Evangelism (DPE) team, and Girish Joshi, Mobile Ecosystem lead in DPE. Vaidyanathan and Joshi gave an overview of Windows Phone and momentum on the platform, while Hoskins discussed the Microsoft BizSpark program, goals and agenda for the week, and how best to take advantage of the resources at Mobile Acceleration Week.

Team Introductions

After a short break, Ujjwal Kumar, Evangelist for DPE, took the stage to talk about the Windows Phone Application Lifecycle and a technical overview on starting WP development. This was an active group, with lots of good questions on architecture and API support.

Kickoff Session

With a break for lunch to refuel the brain power for the afternoon, the day continued with a presentation by Kumar as well as Priyanka Patel from iLink Systems on the Windows Phone User Interface and User Experience. This is typically one of our most popular sessions. Around half of the startups are building their first mobile apps, while the others are porting from iPhone and Android, but all are looking for ways to stand out and increase user engagement. The group was particularly interested in the panorama UI and live tiles. Two of the apps we used as examples are Stubhub and Cocktail Flow, one of the top rated apps in India.

MAW Bangalore Participants

The rest of the day was spent in 1:1 meetings with Motivity Labs and iLink Systems who are supporting the event with onsite UI and technical support. Today, startups worked on setting up basic design and process flow, app architecture, and initial coding.

In addition to all these presentations and support, Hoskins began 1:1 business consulting sessions with several of the startups. Microsoft will be running the consulting sessions throughout the week.

Startups worked late into the evening, with the room still crowded after 8pm. Tomorrow promises to be another action packed day, with a presentation on Marketplace and Monetization and a special partner presentation by Vaideeswaran Sethuraman from Divum.
